Apply to be a Tutor

The Julia N. Visor Academic Center offers opportunities for student employment as a content tutor, writing tutor, or supplemental instruction leader. To view available positions please visit Illinois State University Jobs.  Please Note: Our traditional hiring times are April (for fall) and November (for spring). We occasionally hire mid-semester, depending on demand. We do not hire new tutors for summer at this time.

Content Tutor

Content tutors provide small-group tutoring on a weekly basis, as well as drop-in tutoring, for lower level courses at Illinois State University. A Comprehensive list of courses is at: http://ucollege.illinoisstate.edu/tutoring/.

The ideal candidate will be proficient in the area in which he/she desires to tutor and be able to convey that knowledge clearly via the spoken and written word.  A grade of A or high B is usually required in the course(s) in which the candidate is applying to tutor. Applicants must have an overall GPA of at least a 2.80; priority consideration will be given to those with a 3.00 GPA.  Additional courses in the subject area applied for would be preferred.  The tutor provides help tailored to each student’s needs, so he/she must be friendly, desire to be helpful, and must be able to communicate effectively. While the main responsibility is tutoring, there will be other tasks as assigned by graduate assistant supervisors and the Coordinator of Learning Services.

If you have not taken a course for which you applying to tutor, yet are a major of that discipline and have completed courses above it satisfactorily, you will still be considered for the position. Likewise, applications are grouped based on discipline. If you only want to tutor one of the courses listed in the job title, you may signify specific courses interested in tutoring on the application.
