Advising

Academic Peer Advisors

University College Academic Peer Advisors (APAs) assist students with developing academic plans and connecting them with campus resources through professional advice and personal experience.

Peer Advisors are paired with a full-time professional advisor and have the following job responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Advise first-year students with academic planning
  • Assist in the delivery of University College program and services, which may include public presentations
  • Acquire a general knowledge of University programs, services, policies including all applicable academic deadlines
  • Assist the University College Advising office with answering phone calls, checking in students in the reception area, scheduling appointments for advising staff, and providing timely and accurate information to appropriate University offices

Be a Peer Advisor

Become a member of one of the longest-running Academic Peer Advising programs in the nation. In addition to learning more about the resources at Illinois State, you will also gain valuable skills to help you as you transition to your career.

Dates of Employment

  • August 15, 2024 – May 9, 2025
  • May include University breaks
  • Optional summer availability from May 20 – August 14, 2024 (Dependent on office needs for Preview 2023)
  • Work 12– 15 hours a week (dependent on advisement office needs and time of year)
  • Office hours: Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate students
  • Minimum GPA: 2.75
  • Minimum 1-year commitment
  • Available for mandatory pre-semester training August 15 and 16, 2024
  • Available for mandatory weekly training throughout each semester on Thursdays from 8-8:50 a.m.

At least one reference form is required in order to be considered for the Academic Peer Advising position. Reference forms are submitted through Microsoft Forms. Reference forms must be submitted before the March 1, 2024 deadline.

Content Tutor

Content tutors provide small-group tutoring on a weekly basis for lower-level courses at Illinois State.

Eligibility

  • Proficiency in your content area
  • Ability to communicate your knowledge in written and spoken form
  • Grade of A or high B in courses you want to tutor
  • Overall GPA of 2.8 or higher

Peer Instructor

Peer instructors co-instruct Success 101 and Thrive seminars with a faculty or staff member. They serve as a role model and guide to help students succeed. We provide the course material while you provide the delivery and teaching style that makes a meaningful impact on students.

Peer Mentor

Peer mentors are paired with students taking a seminar. Mentors serve as a strong and dedicated support person as they help new students transition to college.

Developmental Math Tutor

Developmental Math tutors provide individual and small-group tutoring on a drop-in basis for students in Beginning and Intermediate Algebra.

Applications are accepted mid-October and mid-March to start employment the following semester.

Eligibility

  • Overall GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • Major in any Math sequence, Chemistry, Biology, or Physics (applicants can also be a Math minor)

Success 101 Peer Instructor

Success 101 peer instructors help new students make a smooth academic and social transition to Illinois State. The primary responsibility of a Peer Instructor is to assist the instructor with a section of Success 101.

Eligibility

  • Be a sophomore, junior, or senior
  • Overall GPA if 2.5 or higher
  • Previous enrollment in Success 101 (preferred)

Supplemental Instruction Leader

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders facilitate small to large group sessions in a particular course area for three hours per week.

Eligibility

  • Ability to attend the class in which you’re providing sessions
  • Proficient in the area where you will be an SI leader

Thrive Peer Instructor

Thrive Peer Instructors help new students transition to Illinois State. The primary responsibility of a Peer Instructor is to assist the instructor with a section of Thriving in College, Career and Beyond (IDS 128). A 2.5 GPA is required when you apply.

Eligibility

  • Be a sophomore, junior, or senior
  • Overall GPA of 2.5 or higher

Writing Tutor

Writing tutors provide one-on-one and occasionally small group writing assistance.

Eligibility

  • Demonstrated success in one or more writing-intensive courses
  • Prior experience or attested potential working with students
  • Aptitude in one or more writing or citation styles such as APA, AP, MLA, Chicago/Turabian, research writing, literary analysis, etc. (preferred)

Front Desk Help

The people who work our front desk help our visitors get what they need and perform various administrative tasks.

Orientation

Preview Guide

Preview Guides are student ambassadors that lead Illinois State’s first-year students and their families through the summer orientation program. Guides work closely with a team of orientation staff to welcome and ease student and family members’ transitions to college during the two-day program. Learn more about becoming a Preview Guide

Applications open January 2024.

Transfer Student Assistant

Transfer Student Assistants work closely with our Orientation and Training Services staff and support the Transfer Day Program. Students do not have to be a transfer student to be eligible.

Applications open in early fall.

Eligibility

  • GPA of 2.25 GPA or higher
  • One letter of reference

MASAI

MASAI Mentor

The Mentoring, Academics, Scholarship, and Achievement Initiative (MASAI) is a University College mentoring program that is focused on the retention of first-year underrepresented and first-generation students. MASAI partners incoming first-year Noble students with a current Illinois State student to facilitate a successful transition into the University community and assist them with creating an optimal academic and social experience at Illinois State.

  • Junior or senior

Success Advocacy

Peer Success Advocate

Peer Success Advocates are successful college students who help peers develop and refine their approaches to learning and studying. They are good listeners and empathetic to struggles.

Eligibility

  • 2.8 cumulative GPA or higher
  • 24 credit hours earned at Illinois State
  • Available to work two semesters in a row
